Week 1

Monday 15th January 2024
  • For my first time visiting Tyndall, I had to take part in a first day on-boarding session.
  • We were shown various PowerPoint presentations regarding the company and all the rules that it has regarding using the computers or the rooms within the building.
  • We were also given sheets that we had to fill in to create our accounts for Tyndall, including creating our own passwords.
  • We were shown the safety protocols and what we need to do during the event of a fire or a gas leak.
  • I met up with my supervisor, Ré O'Cinneide, and we had a chat about what we were going to do in Tyndall.
  • I was given a list of things I need to do:
  1. Do everything from the email you will get.
  2. Look at the Tyndall website and learn about the company.
  3. Look at the videos that Ré sends.
  4. Creative Project: Create a video blog regarding anything related to Tyndall, be it the building, the inventions, students, etc.
  5. Main Project: Create a video blog about students and their PHDs, asking them technical information (such as what it's about) as well as their personal experience (how they felt working on it, if it lived up or averted their expectations)
  6. Planning Project. Create a video blog planning how the students can do their PHDs in the next four years, and how they will record their experience for social media.
  7. Need to be videos.
  8. No set amount of videos required.

My cubicle

Tuesday 16th January 2024
  • Received my Tyndall email for any work related emails I will receive.
  • Currently starting some brainstorming on what video I will make based around the videos others have made for Tyndall, that Ré has sent to me.

Ideas for Tyndall video - Creative
  • Film in locations around the Tyndall campus, including the various rooms and also different shots of the students working on projects.
  • I would be featured in the video talking about how it feels to be in Tyndall, and my first thoughts.
  • I would also mention the various projects that the students would be working on, based on what I have asked previously.
  • I need to write down a script for the video that is inspired by the videos that were sent.
  • I was also getting myself involved with all the Tyndall safety training that I needed to do. Any more that I can do could be either done tomorrow or at home.
  • My new laptop for work has arrived and it looks great. However, I need to wait until it is properly set up by Don Lynch so that I can properly start working on the video blog.

Wednesday 17th January 2024
  • I have learned that my UCC staff ID is 46130.
  • I have completed the last of the Tyndall safety training presentations so that means they are all finished.
  • I will be attending a seminar at 10:30am that will discuss access cards. Hopefully I will be receiving one today.
  • I have received my access card today, so I no longer need to constantly return the visitor card that I have been using for the past two days.
My Tyndall swipe card

  • I am currently working on a script for the creative video.
  • Received some notes from Ray about what I will be doing:
  1. Record shots around Tyndall (no people)
  2. Create a UCC digital badge (until laptop)

  • I have to record some footage of locations around the college so that I may use it in my creative video. I was also told to not worry about asking students as he will be the one coordinating them.
  • Once I receive my laptop, I will be getting a chance to create a UCC Digital Badge
  • I took part in a Quality Management on-boarding session through Microsoft Teams explaining on how to use QT9.
  • I finally received my laptop to use, though I plan to put it to full use tomorrow.

Thursday 18th January 2024
  • Properly exploring everything that is on my laptop, which is Windows 11.
  • There will be some programs (mainly the Adobe Creative Suite) that I will ask to install on my laptop, seeing as I can't install it myself.
  • I will let them know that I will use my licence from MTU to use on my work laptop.
  • Seeing as I do not have any Adobe programs installed, in the meantime, I decided I would sketch out a UCC digital badge to see how I can approach it.
  • Unfortunately, it looks like they do not have the rights to use Adobe on their computer, so we are looking for an alternative.
  • I have the digital badge designs sketched up:
  • In particular, Ré liked the second design best, and he said to digitize this sketch by Tuesday. Although I do not have any Adobe products, I was suggested to use Paint and/or Gimp (which are both on my laptop) to create the digital version.
  • I organized a room for meeting with Ré on Tuesday myself.
  • I was also suggested that if I don't have any access to Adobe products on my laptop, I can do the video projects at home.
  • I have signed up for the Manual Handling Practical and the Fire Extinguisher Training for the 6th and 22nd of February respectively.
  • Here is my list of notes for that day:
  1. Create initial sketch [DONE]
  2. Make a digital version of it [TUESDAY]
  3. Use Paint or Gimp [TUESDAY]
  4. Meet up with Ré Tuesday 23rd, Outlook calendar invitation, look up room bookings on Intranet, book for 30 mins [DONE]
  5. If not possible to download programs on laptop, work on videos at home

Friday 19th January 2024
  • Working on making a digital copy of the badge that I sketched yesterday. I will make two versions. One that is in the style of other UCC Digital Badges, and another where I draw it up, to tap into my creative side, as well as to practice work on GIMP.
  • These are the aforementioned badges that I made:
  • Although Ré liked both, he preferred the first one as it felt more like the UCC digital badges.
  • He also stated that I should change Digital Badge to MNS Handbook, which I did:
