Week 3
Monday 29th January 2024
- Today I plan to write down ideas on how to advertise Tyndall to a more international audience.
- Ideas on how to advertise Tyndall to a more international market:
- Mention how welcoming the place is for any newcomers.
- Talk about your personal experience and say how you felt when you first visited versus how you feel about it now.
- Discuss the opportunities that it has to offer to any newcomers, whether they be working here or studying there.
- Bring up a list of different topics you can bring up that a new student can potentially study, so that they can bring interest to new students.
- Mention how you know someone else that also joined Tyndall that also had a nice time here, so you will have more people to talk about.
- Whenever I get home, I definitely should think of composing some music for the creative video.
- I worked on a tentative graphic for the Student² video blog.
- I worked on a who what when table for various tasks for the coming weeks.

- Today I decided to work from home today to focus on some video and music related work.
- I am currently rendering a video showcasing a scrolling parallax background.
- I plan to use this for my full creative video.
- I also got to work on a song for the video using FL Studio.
- Both of these have been rendered and with that, I got two assets that I can use in my creative video.
- I am back working in the building today so that way I can type up and draw more assets.
- I am currently typing my script onto Word, and I plan to rewrite it so it adds more about how friendly it is to an international market.
- Here is the script that I wrote up:
- I accepted an invitation to have coffee mornings from 11:00 to 11:30
- I created an animated version of the Student2 logo with some animated details.
- I had a meeting with Ré and these are the notes that I got for today:
- Moving footage featuring Tyndall logo
- Gantt chart
- Send blog
- Send the individual weeks by the end of each Friday.
- Send weeks 1-3 by this Friday
- Write down your plan that you wrote down
- I can still do the third project without getting the second project
- Start - technical problem, next - paper research, next - look up SOA, next - one technical innovation
- I might do some brainstorming on what kind of hypothetical project I can work on as a PHD student, seeing as I can work on that even without working on the 2nd project.
- Right now I'm checking on if there are any good webcam recording sites for free, so that I may work on recording myself talking for the creative video.
- I have arranged a meeting room for myself so that I may do some filming of myself, as I have found a good website. It is called Weet and it can help me record some good camera footage with any custom backgrounds.
- I have the footage recorded and ready to put in my video editing software whenever I get to work from home.
- It even let me use custom backgrounds, which is good because I decided to give it a greenscreen. I will see if this works, I can always rerecord it.
- I will plan to research some information on what projects PHD students study.
- Today's plans will involve looking up what projects PHD students study so that I may be able to partake in the third project. Although the second project hasn't been done yet, I was still told to go on into working on the third project anyway.
- I found myself a link to a site that will help with this project: https://academiainsider.com/what-phd-students-do-real-life-case-studies-and-examples/
- According to the website above, the tasks to perform as a PHD student is as follows:
|
Key Tasks of a PhD Student |
Description |
|
Performing experiments |
Collecting data and testing hypotheses in a lab or using computational methods. |
|
Analyzing data |
Processing and interpreting the results of experiments to draw conclusions and determine the next steps. |
|
Writing and presentations |
Creating reports, writing the thesis, and preparing presentations to communicate research findings. |
|
Administration and organization |
Managing paperwork, ordering reagents, and handling other administrative tasks associated with the research. |
|
Collaborating with lab group |
Working as part of a team and contributing to the overall research goals of the group. |
|
Attending conferences |
Presenting research, networking with other scientists, and staying up to date on the latest findings in the field. |
|
Teaching (optional) |
Instructing younger students, improving communication skills, and building confidence through teaching. |
|
Communication and public speaking |
Presenting research findings to different audiences, including peers, supervisors, and at conferences. |
|
Professional development |
Continuously learning and developing new skills related to the research area, as well as transferable skills such as project management and communication. |
- Also according to the website, PHD students ted to gather and analyze data, conduct experiments, and publish papers related to their research. So with that in mind, I need to think about what my project should be about.
